GET READY WEEKLY

Prepare to resist with Portland, Maine’s GET READY WEEKLY, a roving drop-in event of visual resistance production for the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency. During weekly workshops + events, artists + non-artists alike are invited to participate in dynamic and creative projects that stand against corporate greed, bigotry, homophobia, xenophobia, racism, + sexism.

WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS

PROTEST PUPPETS with Chris Patch
SUNDAY, MARCH 5th and 19th, 2017
1:00-5:00 PM
Please join us as at Mayo Street Arts to build large-scale puppets and masks to be used in an upcoming rally in Portland on April 15th. The concept for this puppet extravaganza is rooted in the tradition of the “Ancient and Horribles” parades of New England past. These critical occasions were meant to satirize politicians and public figures. It’s time to resurrect this art form – in these unsteady days, we could not have more reasons to MARCH!

Bring yourself and your friends and family! If you can, please contribute any materials that may be useful such as cardboard, paper bags, newspaper, fabric, hot glue gun, paints, scrap wood, etc. We will have some supplies on hand, but could always use the extra materials!

RESISTANCE READINGS with The Chart
TUESDAY, MARCH 7th, 2017
6:00-8:00 PM

Babylon Restaurant
Join The Chart over dinner for a group reading and discussion focused on the intersection of art, gentrification, racism, and journalism: how do the stories that are told about a place shape its narratives? How are artists complicit in story-telling and how do we make our work responsibly? We’ll be reading a short essay by Taylor Renee Aldridge and applying the things we learn to the cultural and economic landscape of Portland.

While it may be helpful to read the article before we meet and think about some of the things Aldridge is proposing, we’ll read the piece together in order to get comfortable speaking with and around one another, and follow that with a facilitated discussion afterward.

We’ll have copies of the reading available for you!
